About Country Dancing

We offer the gay and lesbian community a friendly, social alternative to the current bar and club scene. Our environment offers same sex and gender bias-free partner dancing -- sometimes for the first time for many dancers. Those individuals who may feel less comfortable with partner dancing usually find line dancing a pleasant alternative. Line dancing allows dancers to center on their own dance needs within the context of group dancing.

Country dance is fun and varied. Purists will argue, but the fact is, the corny and hayseed hick element is gone from country forever, and has been replaced with a much broader appeal. There are all kinds of partner dances including two-stepping (at various speeds), east coast swing, west coast swing, waltz, etc. And don't miss the partner changing Barn Dance -- the best way to meet everyone at the dance! The Phoenix Circle is also fun and allows ample opportunity to see everyone on the dance floor. Practice makes perfect for the Wooden Nickel! Plus the ever-popular line dances, of which there are thousands of variations. Everyone runs out to dance their favorites, which often include the Tush Push, the Electric Cowboy, the Tahoe Kick, and the Boot Scootin' Boogie. New dances are choreographed constantly.

Regardless of the form of country dance, through country dancing, gays and lesbians build broadly-based social skills, experience physicality, and may explore intimacy without the all-too-common pressure of competition, posturing, sexual innuendo, availability, or performance skills. All country dancing encourages inclusion, and brings down our societal (and sometimes self-inflicted) separatism based on sex, age, race, etc. In a rare and supportive atmosphere of true freedom, dancers begin to and eventually master their own physical and spiritual communication through the world of country dance. Self esteem tends to skyrocket! Newcomers will find it is not uncommon for gay & lesbian country dancers to refer to the significant changes in their life since they began country dancing. Nothing can be guaranteed, of course, and like anything in life -- you get out of it what you put into it.

Now it is your turn. Come to one of our dances and find out for yourself!
